Echo Pacific Construction Completes State-of-the-Art Photo Lab for Southwestern Community College - Lab ready for academic year 2011-2012
September 6, 2011 (Escondido, CA) – Echo Pacific Construction is pleased to announce the completion of Photo Lab Building 570 on the Southwestern Community College campus. This 50 year old photography building is one of the last major infrastructure projects utilizing Proposition AA funding.
In 2000 South Bay residents passed Proposition AA allowing Southwestern College to access $89 million in general obligation bonds used for infrastructure, renovation and modernization. The proposition passed with a 70 percent voter approval and opened the door for some of SWCC's most ambitious and community improving projects including the modernization of buildings 510 and 570.
Modernization of the 570 building into a 21st century digital photography lab right in the middle of the campus posed unique challenges. Logistics required all new rooftop air conditioning equipment to be craned in from the campus drive. Bringing power, data, intercom and fire alarm in from an adjacent building had to be accomplished by running conduit overhead on the roof of the covered walkways. Demolition of the building required working over the winter break to ensure the noisy operations did not go on while the campus was occupied. Upgrading the foundations to current earthquake and building codes meant cutting out large portions of the floors, anchoring new reinforcing and pouring new footings. As a result three new digital classrooms were provided with the latest technology and a complete photo studio was constructed with state-of-the-art lighting.
Now currently underway is the second phase of the project, the classroom and central custodian facility modernization of building 510 scheduled for completion in December 2011.
